AWOS UPDATE

10-25-2009

The AWOS for MLAA has been approved by the FAA and CDOT for funding. We have had to change our site twice. The first site was a conflict with safe glider operations.

An alternative site was selected on property we own just south of the glider windsock. Utilities surveys and FAA approval was given, then we hit another snag.

The FAA requires that we own or control (easements) a 1000 foot wide area (500ft 360degree circle) around the AWOS for accurate winds. The second site would have met that criteria if the purchase agreement we have been working on was finished (see the pdf at 2MLA.com).

The MLAA board of directors met last Thursday (10/22) with our consultants (ADG), and chose a third alternative site east of the main runway and south of the crosswind that meets the 500 foot circle requirement on our own property.

Bottom Line. The AWOS is now back on track and no longer tied to the property purchase. But the clock starts over for new FAA and FCC site approval and new utilities survey.

We should have AWOS installation underway in 3 or 4 months from the date of the new submission.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
